JMT is seeking a Design Engineer to join the Highways department. Work duties mainly include conducting and coordinating the production of traffic signal plans, signing and pavement marking plans, roadway lighting plans, intelligent transportation systems (ITS) plans, and maintenance of traffic (MOT) plans to the Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&E) stage. Practical knowledge of construction of traffic control devices is desirable. The Design Engineer is responsible for engineering design using knowledge of general engineering principles and practices to interpret, organize, execute and coordinate assignments.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field from ABET accredited engineering program (or ability to obtain within 6 months from date of hire)

  • Minimum of 6 months (of relevant continuous full-time employment) working experience in the United States in Environmental, Transportation Engineering, or Construction Inspection

  • Proficient in discipline specific design software

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office

  • Written and oral communication skills

  • Engineer-in-training certification

  • Related experience within review process creation and quality control or performance management

  • Experience working with local clients at the county and state level

  • Microstation experience

Required Experience

  • Perform alternative studies

  • Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography and other topographical or geologic data to plan projects

  • Perform design computations

  • Design projects in accordance with client specifications and guidelines, using design software and drawing tools

  • Assist client with review of third party plans, field evaluations for design projects, construction inspection activities, and design of transportation projects

  • Develop construction cost estimates

  • Assist in the preparation of engineering documents for advertisement and construction

  • Coordinate with internal team members to ensure project completion by the defined deadline and established quality

Working Conditions:

Work is performed within a general office environment 90% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.

Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
